Franciscan Health Cancer Center Indianapolis, Mooresville Pose 'Triple Threat Against Cancer'

Franciscan Health Cancer Center Indianapolis and Mooresville have earned three national accreditations from the American College of Surgeons and are the only cancer program in the state to receive this recognition.

Both locations were up for voluntary renewal and have been accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC) and the Commission on Cancer (CoC). To achieve these accreditations, the cancer program met rigorous improvement standards focused on outcomes, survival and quality of life.

The multidisciplinary standards range from cancer prevention programs to research and education to investments in technology and more.

"This recognition attests to the hard work and commitment of the clinicians and support staff at our Indianapolis and Mooresville locations," said Peter Garrett, MD, medical director of cancer services at Franciscan Health Cancer Center. "We describe these three accreditations as a 'triple threat against cancer' as we continue to improve the health outcomes of the patients we are privileged to serve."

As a NAPBC-accredited center, Franciscan Health Breast Center is committed to maintaining levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive, patient-centered, multidisciplinary care for patients with breast disease. Patients can be confident that their breast care team includes health care professionals from a variety of disciplines who are committed to working together throughout the course of their treatment.

To achieve voluntary NAPRC accreditation, a rectal center demonstrates compliance with the NAPRC standards that look at program management, clinical services and quality improvement. This includes establishment of a rectal cancer team with clinical representatives from surgery, pathology, radiology, radiation oncology and medical oncology.

The CoC Accreditation Program provides the framework to improve the quality of patient care through various cancer-related programs that focus on the full spectrum of cancer care including prevention, early diagnosis, cancer staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation, life-long follow-up for recurrent disease, and end-of-life care. Like all CoC-accredited facilities, Franciscan Health maintains a cancer registry and contributes data to the National Cancer Database, a joint program of the CoC and American Cancer Society.
