Tigers Keep Win Streak Alive with 76-67 Victory Over Yeomen
The DePauw men's basketball team extended its win streak to five games after beating the Oberlin College Yeomen 76-67 at home. The Tigers improve to 12-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while the Yeomen drop to 4-11 and 0-6 in NCAC play.
Oberlin took a quick 8-4 lead in the first three minutes of play, forcing DePauw to adjust and slow down the fast-paced Yeomen. The Tigers found their rhythm by the game's first timeout and went on a 6-to-2 run to knot the game at 10. Following the timeout, Ryan Jacobson drilled a three-pointer, giving DePauw its first lead and ultimately swinging the game in favor of the Tigers.
With 15 minutes left in the first half, the Tigers began to pull away from the Yeomen, going up by as much as 12 heading into the final minutes of the half. A late three by Oberlin's Cole Otley helped the Yeomen cut the Tigers' lead to 36-27 just before the intermission.
Heading into the second half, DePauw had already edged Oberlin in the paint, putting up 20 points within the key while holding the Yeomen to just 10 points within the paint. In the second half, the Tigers continued its dominance in the paint, opening the half with a quick hook shot by Camden Brown. Though DePauw continued to find success around the key, Oberlin's Asaan Snipes-Rea chipped away at the Tiger defense, helping the Yeomen get within five points with just under 13 minutes left in the game.
However, the combination of depth and accuracy at the free-throw line proved to be too much for Oberlin. Up 47-42, the Tigers adjusted on both ends of the court and went on an 11-to-2 run following two made free-throws by Ronald Johnson. Despite the Yeomen finding success behind the arc in the final two minutes of play to cut DePauw's lead to as little as seven, the Tigers put the game away at the line, shooting 8-for-10 from the strike.
Three Tigers finished with double figures; Brown completed the night with a career-high 16 points, eight rebounds, and one block. Elijah Hales added 16 points and seven rebounds, while Sam Jacobs recorded 11 points for the night. Jacobson pulled down seven rebounds and tallied a block and steal.
The Yeomen's Dorde Otasevic paced Oberlin with 24 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Joining Otasevic in double figures was Will Bousquette with 14 points, four assists, and three steals.
DePauw shot 46.9 percent from the field to Oberlin's 40.3 percent, and the Tigers' bench outscored the Yeomen 23-15. The Tigers finished the evening 25 of 29 from the free-throw line, while the Yeomen were just 3-6 from the strike.
The Tigers return to Neal Fieldhouse this Saturday, Jan. 14, and host Wabash following the women's basketball game against Kenyon. DePauw and Wabash tip-off at 3 p.m. EST.
