DePauw Falls to Saint Benedict in Final Game in Hawaii
Saint Benedict scored 11 straight points during a stretch of the second period to break a 20-20 tie and never trailed the rest of the way in a 69-58 win over DePauw in the final game of the Big Island Holiday Classic. DePauw dropped to 5-5, while Saint Benedict improved to 10-1.
The Bennies took a 20-16 lead after the first period before DePauw's Moira McGinley and Ava Hassel scored in the opening 40 seconds of the second period to even the count at 20-20. Saint Benedict's Lydia Hay scored seven and Carla Meyer added four as the Bennies scored 11 consecutive points to take a 31-20 lead.
DePauw was back within seven on three occasions with the last coming at 35-28, but Saint Benedict closed the half with a 7-0 run to take a 42-28 advantage into the halftime intermission.
The Bennies scored the first four points of the second half to make it 46-28 and DePauw got as close as 14 before Saint Benedict took a 56-40 lead after three periods.
Meyer's three-pointer to open the fourth gave Saint Benedict its largest lead at 59-40 and DePauw got no closer than 10 the rest of the way.
Mya Shannon led DePauw with 15 points with Hassel adding 14 and McGinley 13. Ainsley Boras grabbed 11 rebounds for the Tigers.
Meyer paced Saint Benedict with 20 points with Gabby Martin, Lydia Hay and Olivia Boily each scoring 10. Hannah Johnson hauled down eight boards in the win.
DePauw shot 32.2 percent from the floor to the Bennies' 40.6 percent, while Saint Benedict held a 41-40 edge on the boards.
The Tigers return to play on Thursday, December 29, with a 2 p.m. game against Marian (Wis.) in the opening game of the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Tournament in Neal Fieldhouse.
